SPINDRIFT

Spindrift is a psychedelic rock band created by singer-songwriter-composer-producer-actor Kirpatrick Thomas.  Founded in 1992, the band originated in Newark, Delaware, heavily influenced by The Doors, My Bloody Valentine, HawkwindBruce Haack, and Chrome.  These early years were heavier, experimental, and differed greatly from their present sound.  However, the band’s unique, ideal, creative DIY style and hard-grafting work-ethic has always remained.

Band-members Kirpatrick Thomas, Joe Baluta and Zachary Hansenrelocated to Los Angeles in 2001, subsequently adopting members of various legendary/cult bands: Bobby Bones of Psychic TV, Dave Koenig, Dan Allaire, Frankie “Teardrop” Emersonand Rob Campanellaof The Brian Jonestown Massacreand Jason “Plucky” Anchondo of The Warlocks.  Inspired by the new desert locale, they also adopted a new stylistic approach, evoking the spirit of the Old West as mythologized by Western Cinema (Spaghetti Westernsin particular), as evinced by their 2003 album, Songs From The Ancient Age.  Thomas then worked alongside director Mike Bruce on the film The Legend Of God’s Gun (2005), the duo taking their cues from the collaborative works of Spaghetti Western legend Sergio Leone and soundtrack titan Ennio Morricone and giving birth to the ‘Psychedelic Spaghetti Western’ genre.

Scene-leading tours with giants such as Dead Meadow, The Black Angels and The Dandy Warhols saw the line-up remain consistent but by 2009 the band had hit the wall, due to tour-burnout and financial difficulties, and scaled back the operation.  A new line-up performed at SXSW 2010, Psych Fest III, toured the US again with The Black Angels and Dead Meadow and Europe with B.R.M.C. and Black Mountain, in 2010, and performed with Chrome frontman Helios Creed in 2011.  In December 2010, after a 7 week U.S. Tour and following a successful Kickstarter campaign, the band recorded Classic Soundtracks Volume 1 at Hicksville Trailer Palace in Joshua Tree, CA.
