MORE INFO

Originalkly from Ljubljana (Slovenia) but based in Glasgow for many years, Maya Medvesek, better known as NIGHTWAVE, has established herself as an internationally renowned DJ, producer, vocalist, club promoter, label boss and activist.  Since attending the prestigious Red Bull Music Academy in 2011, Nightwave has explored her signature punchy sound of acid, Chicago house, Detroit techno and electro; fused with heady rave nostalgia and the latest, hybrid forms of club music. Her releases on labels Unknown To The Unknown, Balkan Vinyl, Fabric, Ministry of Sound, Warp and her own imprint Heka Trax have secured widespread kudos and praise from the world’s most respected music outlets.

Nightwave’s 2017 debut release on Fool’s Gold Records – Wavejumper EP – received similarly rave reviews; with Complex calling it “no doubt some of Nightwave’s most impressive work to date.” Following the success of Wavejumper, Nightwave released the Sanctuary EP on Fool’s Gold in 2018. From the euphoric house anthem Limelight, to the hypnotic, off-kilter, percussion-driven techno of the title track Sanctuary, this bold EP saw Nightwave returning to her early club roots and solidifying her sound; nodding to classic raves, but giving us something entirely new and exciting for 2018 clubs and festival stages. The Sanctuary EP also features Nightwave’s first vocals since featuring on Rustie’s hit Surph on Warp in 2011, and was described by Pitchfork as “club music euphoria”, while Resident Advisor called it “especially excellent”.

Having remixed Leonidas & Hobbes’ Heavy Weather to head-turning affect on the very first HM release back in 2013, (Various Artists, Midnight Thunder EP), it’s a pleasure to welcome her as the headliner for this event, bringing things full circle.

Vocalist and international DJ par excellence, MICHELLE MANETTI brings a taste of east London’s Femme Fraiche events in east London.  Michelle is the founder and chief editor of prestigious female run music blog www.lipstickdisco.co.uk which has built up an enviable reputation within the industry and among its solid fanbase for showcasing the finest and freshest underground House, Techno and Disco, with particular emphasis on promoting female talent.

Also the vocalist for The Off Key Hat, whose new EP is out on HM in late Sept/early Oct, and also an international DJ of no mean repute, chalking up regular gigs at legendary spots such as Berlin’s Tresor and all over London ( XOYO, Egg, Ministry Of Sound, Scala, Coronet, Dance Tunnel, Dalston Superstore, East Bloc, Plan B and Cargo, among many more).  In short, we’re nothing short of honoured to be welcoming Michelle to Edinburgh for the first time, as part of this event!

With releases for more respected labels than you could put in a pile and call a tree (2020Vision, Hizou, Doppler, Thug, Plastic City, Leftroom, A.E.R, Inner shif, Shanti and Dan Curtin’s Metamorphic most recently), JACKSONVILLE brings his firing, live machine funk grooves (crossover soul/house/techno) to the party.

EXTERIOR is the artist moniker of Edinburgh producer Doug MacDonald.  Exterior represents his transition to electronic music and an embrace of the dancefloor.  Doug played hardcore and noise-rock for a long time before eventually abandoning collaboration, nostalgia and formulaic rebellion in favour of synthesis.  What he gained on the way was an understanding of the power of live drumming and years of finely honed performance-skills, something of an aberration in dance music.  Exterior thus represents a convergence of disparate personal and musical pleasures.  Accordingly Exterior draws on rhythmic mavericks as divergent as Fugazi//Battles//Swans as well as DJ Spoko//Clark//Hieroglyphic Being.  In addition there is a deep undercurrent of melody and texture drawing on the likes of Burial//Miles Davis//Bjork. Eschewing the modern home computer in favour of an exclusively hardware based approach, Exterior espouses a physical relationship to what is at heart an abstract practice, composing electronic dance music.

His debut EP “Public Transport” was released on London/Barcelona-based Land Recordings earlier in 2018.  Having played his debut headlining show in Berlin this September, more live performances are planned for the end of the year including this one, to fete the launch of new EP Plagued Streets of Pity on 12″ vinyl via Hobbes Music (HM011). This record represents a significant move forward in sophistication and club-readiness.

GAMING is the fresh new braindance electronica project from veteran producer and musician Alan Bryden, previously known as Sidewinder (signed to the Fenetik off-shoot label of Glasgow’s Soma Records for a run of singles and an album). These hip hop inspired, sample based dancefloor cut ups received huge support from DJs as diverse as Groove Armada, Laurent Garnier, Mad Matts, Domu and more and rocked dancefloors from Stockholm to São Paulo. Sidewinder tracks appeared on numerous compilation albums and are still widely used in film and TV all over the world, thanks to a publishing deal with EMI.  After a stint in Brazil playing with world music fusion musician DJ Tudo and his freewheeling band ‘Sua Gente De Todo Lugar’, Alan returned to Scotland and has been amassing an arsenal of new and old studio gear as well as developing a parallel career as a successful community musician.

GAMING is a new solo outing that brings together a lifelong love of music and technology and creating left field, rhythmic electronica. It’s the sound of IDM, nineties techno and mensch maschine computer music that is as spontaneous as it is programmed. A debut EP is slated for release on Hobbes Music in the new year.

Having remixed the Pet Shop Boys and supplied a mix for i-D Magazine’s Soundcloud  following EPs 1 and 2, LEONIDAS & HOBBES’s third EP ‘The Rags of Time‘ (especially lead track Web Of Intrigue, above) blew up properly last year.  DJs were calling lead track Web of Intrigue their ‘summer anthem’ (Leo Mas, Nancy Noise, Nick The Record, Jim Stanton/Horse Meat Disco), while legendary tastemaker Andrew Weatherall declared that it was ‘going to be massive’.   And it was.  Consequently voted Record of the Year on Bill Brewster’s annual ‘Furtive 50’ poll (by 400+ international DJs), in January ’18, via his highly infuential DJ History podcast, the record hasn’t stopped.  A further re-release is now planned (including an as-yet-unreleased ambient mix), while the duo have also been working on a fourth EP and some remixes (including for the aforementioned Off Key Hat release, which is just out).

While Leo has been an influential figure in east London’s party scene (inspiring the guys behind Brilliant Corners with his own highly audiophile set-up for a series of house parties in Hackney, c. 2009-14), Hobbes is also the label-owner (obv) and fomerly one half of the internationally acclaimed Trouble DJs.  They have been throwing and playing parties together since the mid-90s and have about 50 years of combined DJing experience  betweem them.

The anonymous DALI has released two highly acclaimed 12″s on HM to date, picking up support from the likes of Ben UFO, Avalon Emerson, Laurent Garnier, Daniel Avery and Optimo (among others)… Expect one or two of her tracks to be aired in the mix…
