Future Shorts - Spring Season

Spring Season is officially here and brings with it an exciting programme of short films from the UK, Australia, Sweden, Yemen & Ireland. This season we take you on a journey through a hilarious, ”un-romantic” comedy by Fred CasellaTooty’s Wedding (UK, 2011), a celebration of childhood in Into The Middle Of Nowhere by Anna Frances Ewert (Sweden, 2011), the coincidences of an aeroplane pilot’s actions in Nash Edgerton’s The Captain (Australia, 2013), and the revenge of a young girl on her old boyfriend inSVAMP by Charlotta Miller (Sweden, 2011). The director Musa Syeed narrates a boy’s revolutionary experience in the alleyways of Yemen in Big House (Yemen, 2013), while director Connor Finnegan captures a bird’s nightmare in Fear Of Flying (Ireland, 2013), and finally director Kibwe Tavares depicts the effects of tourism, globalisation, and commercialisation in Zanzibar in his film Jonah (UK, 2012).

Future Shorts Edinburgh is excited to be showcasing the latest video work by Rachel Maclean, A Whole New World, which portrays the fantastical ruins of a fallen empire. Combining grand narrative with cheap product placement, the work explores themes related to British Imperial history and national identity. Maclean plays all the characters in the work, miming to a multilingual soundtrack and bedecked in an elaborate combination of prosthetic make-up, historical costume and Union Jack-encrusted tourist tat. A Whole New World was commissioned for the Margaret Tait Award 2013 in conjunction with Glasgow Film Festival, Creative Scotland and Lux
