Edinburgh Skeptics ... The Sunday Sermon

1 August 2010

Edinburgh author J. F. Derry will be discussing his new book "Darwin In Scotland"

Skeptics in the Pub began in London in 1999, providing an opportunity for rational thinkers to meet and discuss all things skeptical as well as have a monthly presentation by a renowned skeptic or even believer followed by a Q&A. There are over a dozen Skeptics in the Pub in England, but this is only one of two groups in Scotland [the other being Glasgow]

Coming along to a Skeptics in the Pub social is free, though on the occasions of guest speakers we appreciate a donation of £1.50 to cover the speakers expenses.

For more details feel free to contact us, or just pop along to the next night/event

http://edinburgh.skepticsinthepub.org/

Currently, our socials are held upstairs in the Bongo Club Gallery Bar, but during the Fringe Festival, events will be held in other venues in the city - see our website for details.   We'll return to The Bongo Club in September

THE WILDERS - live

1 August 2010

Dagnabbit!  Those lovable Kansas rascals exit the watermelon patch to make a very welcome return visit to the Bongo Club

In full,  unstoppable flight,  the band is firmly established as an Edinburgh Fringe favourite after sell-out runs over three consecutive years at The Famous Spiegeltent.  Triumphant winners of a Herald Angel with a five-star review from the publication,  The Scotsman said: They generate the kind of tunes that should by rights leave vapour trails’.  The Missouri-based four-piece,  is back to thrill capacity crowds again following their sensational tour here last year.

Playing storming roots-of-country and old-time with a pure essence of early rockabilly,  they deliver a blistering fiddle/ banjo/ guitar/ dobro/ slap bass hoedown,  playing whiz-bang music as infectious,  fun-loving and goodtime as you will ever hear.

The Last Ever HEADSPIN - feat DJ Yoda

7 August 2010

The curtain will fall on Headspin's monthly events with an extra huge night, featuring by far the most popular of all the guests we have had at the club over the years, the one and only DJ Yoda - 'one of the top ten DJs to see before you die' - Q Magazine.

He hasn't visited Headspin for a few years and it is long overdue that he returns to show us the skills that have made him a legend.  After an inimitable DJ set from Yoda, the Headspin residents will step up to rock the house for the last two hours of Headspin, mashing all styles of danceable music into an unique musical happening.

The original four-deck mix of beats, funk, hiphop, house + more, with live percussion, teased + tweaked with panache by your favourite funky disco jocks Allan Dunbar / Steve Austin / Dava & Bongo Dave, plus visual projections by Foundlight

Bringing the club to a frenzy with their up-front selection of funky party tunes moving into filthy electronic numbers designed to destroy the dancefloor, no-one can rock the Headspin crowd quite like the residents can - prepare to be blown away - for the last time

THE PIANO PROJECT

10 August 2010

St Mary's College Youth Theatre, from Blackburn in Lancashire, present this blend of live film and physical theatre which re-imagines the mysterious life of Andreas Grassl.

Dubbed 'The Piano Man' by the British press, his fragmented journey inspired much international attention and fascination.  Depicting a world stunned by his silence, the play relates a moving tale of identity and isolation.

Through its intricate use of onstage cameras, its portrayal of Grassl is by turns surreal, intense and darkly humorous.  Devised by the company, 'The Piano Project' makes for a truly original experience.

THE PIANO PROJECT

15 August 2010

XPLICIT feat SHY FX & BREAKAGE

20 August 2010

XPLICIT - FESTIVAL SPECIAL

Xplicit once again steps up to deliver one of the biggest clubbing events at the Edinburgh Festival.  This year's event is a Digital Soundboy special featuring jungle/drum and bass legend Shy FX and producer of the moment and remixer of the stars - BREAKAGE.

Shy-FX is a name synonymous with jungle/drum and bass - be it in the early days where he gained commercial and underground success with the huge 'Original Nuttah', or early 2000's chart smasher 'Shake Your Body.' Since then Shy has gone on to set up Digital Soundboy - one of the biggest labels in electronic music covering dubstep, drum n bass, fidget and everything inbetween.  Be it his incredible party sets or production for the likes of Dizzee Rascal, names in drum and bass dont get much bigger than Shy-FX

Breakage is currently the man of the moment, with recently released 2nd album "Foundation" (featuring collaborations with Burial, Donaeo, Newham Generals, David Rodigan, Roots Manuva and more) he has gained widespread support from both the mainstream and the underground.  Known for both his drum and bass and dubstep productions, Breakage is currently the name on everyone's lips when it comes to top quality beats.  With massive remix after remix dropping just now from Massive Attack's 'Paradise Circus' through to Florence and The Machine's 'Dog Days Are Over' or Plan B's 'Prayin' which picked up Zane Lowe's Hottest Record In The World accolade on BBC Radio 1

Upstairs will be handled by the Phuturelabs collective - currently one of the hottest electronic music blogs in the world, they're sure to bring top quality beats whether it be techno, house, dubstep and all the branches of the electronica tree.
