Sean Lee presents ‘Constellations’, a collection of paintings and drawings, at The Bongo Club (28th May – 5th June)

26 May 2016 -

In addition to former Bongo resident artist Kirsty Whiten (who is responsible for the work on our front gate and all the paste-ups of creatures around the venue interior), we have a brand new art exhibition from Sean Lee, called Constellations (running Sat 28th May – Sun 5th June).

Bongo alumnus and fine artist Kirsty Whiten exhibits in RSA Open show

26 November 2015 -

KirstyWhiten_creatures

Kirsty Whiten’s work will be familiar to anyone who’s been coming to The Bongo Club since we moved to our new venue on Cowgate.  Her paste-ups adorn most of the walls inside and the gate at our main entrance boasts one of her maginificent murals.  However, what most of our regulars won’t know is that Kirsty is herself a former Bongo regular, having had a workshop in our original venue (New Street) back in the late Nineties.

‘The RSA Open Exhibition has a long history of celebrating the best of contemporary practice. After having been part of the RSA Annual Exhibition for over 180 years, it now enjoys its own slot in the RSA Calendar. Drawing from artists across the whole of Scotland and beyond, this exhibition showcases around 400 works annually and features a wide range of small and medium sized works (max. 80cm in any direction) selected through open submission including paintings, drawings, sculptures, prints and photographs.’ (RSA website)

The show runs from 28th November – 14th February.  Entry is free.

Cowgate’s First Pop-Up Market

08 December 2014 -

Cowgate_Pop_Up_Fly

On December 13th, Cowgate venues will open their doors for an event quite unlike most others they usually host…

Bringing together Edinburgh’s creative community and showcasing venues that you may otherwise not think to visit, you’ll find a multi-venue pop-up arts & crafts, clothing, vintage, music and food market. For those of you who have been to London – think of Brick Lane with it’s unusual pop-up shops and vintage/arts markets.

Many of the Cowgate venues sit empty in the daytime despite the possibility of opening. To some, you may know them only as nightclubs or late-night bars, but they hold a much more special place in the hearts of those who work there or frequent these spaces.

As a bar manager at a music venue, I’ve watched how the area seems to turn to a ghost town outside of the Festival in August. My hope is that this event will give Edinburgh’s artists, musicians and creatives (of all kinds!) the chance to meet one another, showcase their talent and hopefully bring some new faces to the area.

You can read more about it here.
