Weekly Big Drums sessions throughout May and June at the Bongo Club.
Exploring the basics of hand-to-hand drumming, running rhythms, middle-eastern/North African rhythms, trance rhythms, odd time signatures, hand independence and general rhythmic principles. We’ll be playing a number of large custom built drums, in unison, with sticks, with several people playing each drum. Everything required will be provided (aside from ear protection – not essential but recommended).
Suitable for those who’ve never drummed before (as long as they are not completely arhythmic and are willing to put the effort in), and likely of interest to those who have too.
To be clear: the sessions are not ‘formal’ drum/percussion training, or drum kit/snare lessons, although the principles covered will feed into, and benefit, all kinds of other drum and music activity. Most participants will likely be stretched a fair bit at one point or another.
The main aim is to get stuck in, make some (a lot) of noise, and have fun.
There’s enough room for 23 people per session.
Please note: ideally folk should commit to the full course and attend the same session each week (Tues eve OR Wed afternoon OR Thursday eve). Missing a session or two is OK but drop-ins might be challenging once it gets going as backtracking for people to catch up will slow everyone’s progress.
First week are all taster sessions, feel free to come and try. Note: Limited places left on Thursday evenings.
