Stuart Cosgrove, author, football pundit, broadcaster and iconoclast explores two US cities in two crucial years, in not one but two extraordinary books, Detroit ’67 and Memphis ’68.

Detroit ’67 is the story of Detroit in the most dramatic and creative year in its history. It is the story of Motown, the breakup of The Supremes and the implosion of the most successful African-American record label ever, set against a backdrop of urban riots, escalating war in Vietnam and police corruption.

Memphis ’68, a city synonymous with soul music, but deeply segregated, ill at ease with the modern world and yet to adjust to the era of civil rights and racial integration. Legendary Stax Records offered an escape from the turmoil of the real world for many soul and blues musicians, with much of the music created there becoming the soundtrack to the civil rights movements.

As this tense year unfolds, the city dominates world headlines for the worst of reasons: the assassination of civil rights leader Martin Luther King. Join Stuart to look at these two great homes of Motown and Soul, and hear some of the music that created the soundtrack to the momentous years of riot, rebellion and civil rights.

‘erudition, lightly worn, mixed with pub banter, lightly sworn’ Peter Ross (The Herald)
