IN THE WEST

6th September - 3rd October 2005
By Catherine Hunter Davidson

Catherine Hunter Davidson grew up in Titirangi, West Auckland , New Zealand . She lived in Edinburgh for 6 years, working as a postie, before studying for an HND in Photography.

Catherine is currently living in Penicuik with her family, after nine years back in West Auckland where these portraits were taken.

This exhibition includes sixteen portraits from an ongoing project to document the people and lives of rural communities in West Auckland .  West Auckland shares proximity to a large city, the surrounding bush of the Waitakere Ranges and the famous west coast beaches.

The people represented in this exhibition include painters, sculptors, a repairman, clothing designers, a taxi driver, a farrier and a metal polisher; all are local characters living and working in this unique landscape and community of West Auckland .

Their life stories, written by Sandy Ellis , are available to read at the Bongo Club during the duration of the exhibition.
