What......
I was at work today thinking about what to say about the project. We had been running around all day trying to find 60 or 70gm paper to make some badges but the only stuff we could find cost about a million pounds for 12 sheets!
'Do you need that much?' said the builder from the chapel.
'Well no, probably not. Is it two teas?'
'It's the principle of the thing, eh? Em, they're medium teas please. (pause) So, are you an Artist?' (Capital A with a French influence!)
'Well no, not really, although I suppose it depends on what you call an artist? It's semi-skimmed with two sweetners in one and white sugar in the other isn't it?'
'Aye. (pause) There's this shop down the bottom of Broughton Street with a photograph of a house for 270 pounds...'
'270 pounds!'
'.an it's just an ordinary house, not posh or belonging to anyone famous just an everyday house..'
'It's those prices that give it the capital A!' That's the man who comes everyday for a double shot mocha. The first day I met him I asked if he was on a break.
'No-one has time on me!' he replied.
'I was reading about a guy who sat in baked beans for 7 days just to see what effect it had on his body' he continued.
'And what happened?' I asked.
'I dunno, I gave up after I read that bit.'
'I wonder what happened?' the builder said.
Walk to Work is what happened with our wonderings. Wondering about what happens to time when you work everyday and how that affects the way you see things. About 'Ikea' art that's really just furniture for your walls. About art in general and who says 'this is art'.
I don't know if anyone can be an artist, the word itself is so beguiling. But then it is only a word.
Walk to Work is really about being creative and following through your wonder.
I came home from work and Edward read me a quote from 'Dance, Dance, Dance' by Haruki Murakami that sums up our sentiment. It's a crossed reference really as he's talking about cooking.
" I just put my heart into it. That's the difference. It's a question of attitude. If you really work at something, you can do it, up to a point. If you really work at being happy, you can do it, up to a point."
"But anything more than that, you can't."
"Anything more than that is luck."
I am an artist..
