Fetish n. Any material object supposed to be the vessel, vehicle, or instrument of the supernatural being, the possession of which gives to the possessor or joint possessors power over that being; ( fig .) an object of devotion, an idol.
Sally-Ann Johns is a working artist and designer living in Edinburgh . She studied 3D Design at Gray's School of Art , but works in many different ways, painting and drawing as well as designing and making. She has worked on many different types of projects: interior design, portraits, and illustration.
Her installations explore the issues of sex and spirit. In particular how they relate to each other and their relevance to modern life.
Religious icons represent Man's primordial need for spiritual reality, the bridge between the devotional and the everyday. Religious kitsch illustrates perfectly our struggle to find the spiritual in the mundane. Kitsch expresses our delusions of grandeur. Most importantly like the images we make, we are disposable.
'A prolific talent, artist and designer Sally Ann Johns sculpts / casts everyday objects (salt and pepper pots, lights ....) to become extraordinary tactile pieces with a definite fantastical, surreal quality. Similarly, her drawings and paintings have elements of Magic Realism ..'
